Sahale Glacier Route

moderate snow + 3rd/4th class rock

A spectacular dayhike with my mom and a North Cascades summit.

Region: Washington
Elev: 8,681 ft
Rock type: Granite
Type:
Date(s): July 11, 2025 (Fri)
Partner(s): solo, Sue Abegg (she went as far as Sahale Glacier)

Intro

The original plan was to do an overnight in Boston Basin so I could lead my mom up the 5.0 route on Sharkfin Tower. She had previously climbed Sharkfin in August 1982 via the 5.6 South Face.

But despite arriving at the Marblemount Ranger Station by 6:45am, we couldn’t get a permit for Boston Basin. So we pivoted to two dayhikes out of Cascade Pass instead. On Friday, we hiked up Sahale Arm—my mom stopped at the base of the Sahale Glacier, while I continued to tag the summit. On Saturday, we dayhiked into Boston Basin—my mom lounged in the meadows while I soloed Sharkfin Tower (click link for trip report for Sharkfin Tower).

Sahale Arm is one of the finest dayhikes in the Cascades, and the view from the summit is phenomenal. This page documents our Sahale dayhike via the Sahale Glacier route. I had actually done this same route back in 2002 on a backpacking trip with my parents when I was 19.

The page is a photo-rich recap of the day, with a few bonus shots from that 2002 trip as well.

My parents climbed Sahale Mountain in July 2002, when I was 19 (between high school and college). Take note of the clothing—blue jeans and sweatpants—and the significantly greater snow coverage compared to July 2025.
