Excellent alpine climbing up one of the more striking features in RMNP.

Note: In May 2022, rockfall caused the first half of Pitch 3 to cleave off the side of the buttress. I reclimbed the route in August 2022 to scope out the rockfall scar and the new Pitch 3 bypass. This page contains two trip reports: (1) July 2018: Flying Buttress Left and all the way to summit; and (2) August 2022: Flying Buttress Direct post-2022-rockfall.

Left vs. Direct vs. Right

Flying Buttress ascends the striking, narrow rib that leads directly up the north face to the summit of Meeker. There are enough variations of the Flying Buttress to constitute at least three almost completely different routes:
  1. Flying Buttress Left (5.9, 4p) is the original line of ascent.
  2. Flying Buttress Direct (5.10c, 4-7p) comprises the most direct and aesthetic ascent of the buttress, and at a slightly harder grade than the Left route. Also, add on a couple of bonus pitches for a Direct Finish and tagging the summit of Meeker.
  3. Flying Buttress Right (5.11a, 7p) climbs right of these two routes.
In July 2018, I climbed the Flying Buttress via a mix of the Left and Direct routes. My partner Annie and I started on the Left route but ended on the Direct route including the bonus Direct Finish pitches and summit of Meeker.

In August 2022, I climbed the Flying Buttress Direct. Due to rockfall in May 2022, the nice 1-inch crack on Pitch 3 was no more, so my partner Nate and I climbed the Flying Buttress Right route for Pitch 3. All in all, this route differed by three pitches (Pitches 1-3) from my July 2018 ascent with Annie.

2022 Rockfall

Over Memorial Day weekend 2022, massive rockfall occurred in Dreamweaver Couloir on Mt. Meeker, resulting in one fatality and two injured climbers. The rockfall originated on the Flying Buttress which is just above the couloir. A gigantic part of Pitch 3 had cleaved off. The photos below show the start of Pitch 3, pre- and post-rockfall.

Intro

One of the best climbs in Rocky Mountain National Park is the Flying Buttress of Mt. Meeker, which climbs the most striking feature of Mt. Meeker: a long, narrow rib that climbs to the summit. There are several variations up the buttress (which the Rossiter guidebook describes as three routes: Flying Buttress Left (5.9, the original line of ascent), Flying Buttress Direct (10c), and Flying Buttress Right (11a), although mixing and matching pitches from these three routes is entirely possible.

Annie and I had a blast climbing this route together. Here's a summary of our day: We left the trailhead at 3:40am, which—judging by all the headlights from Keyhole hikers we saw ahead of us—is considered a late start from the Longs Peak trailhead. We arrived at the basin below the Flying Buttress about 3 hours later (seeing the first rays of sun on the buttress was well worth the early start), racked up and left our bigger packs there, and scrambled up to the base of the first pitch. There was another party there already; they were starting up the Direct route, so we started up the Left route option for Pitch 1. Annie and I ended up finishing the pitch well ahead of the other party (the direct route sounded kind of spicy based on the comments we heard from the other party). We started up the 5.9 corner of the Left route for Pitch 2, but midway up the corner, I spotted a hand-crack splitting the face to the right; I couldn't pass it up, so I detoured right and from then on Annie and I climbed the Direct route to the top. Most parties descend after climbing the 5 pitches of the lower Flying Buttress. But it wasn't yet noon when Annie and I topped out on the lower Flying Buttress, the weather forecast was good, and we wanted to climb more and tag the second-highest summit in RMNP. So we continued upward via the upper Flying Buttress. We spent several minutes trying to identify the "steep left-facing dihedral (10a) + left-facing corner (5.9)" mentioned in both the Gillett and Rossiter guidebooks, but couldn't find anything fitting that description that looked good to climb; we spotted a nice dihedral on the left side of the upper buttress and decided to climb this in a single long pitch—it turned out to be pretty good and slightly adventurous 5.9/10a-ish climbing. After that, we unroped and scrambled to the top of Meeker. We took a break on the summit and then scrambled down to The Loft (the saddle between Meeker and Longs). But we were having too much fun, so before descending back to the basin below Meeker and back to the trail, we decided to scramble up to the summit of Longs. After 1000 feet of scrambling we arrived at a giant chasm ("The Notch" we later discovered reading the guidebook) separating us from the summit of Longs; oh well, not a double summit day, but it was a cool position. We scrambled back to our packs at The Loft and started the descent back into the basin below Meeker. We had not heeded the (wise) advice to scope out the descent from below, so we missed the 3rd class ramp and ended up making a rappel down a waterfall and scrambling along some ledge systems until we found the path that more informed climbers use. But it was all part of the adventure, and just added to the fun factor of the day. We picked up our packs in the basin, ran into Alex Honnold as we hit the trail in Chasm Meadows, and got to the trailhead before dark. What a fun day!

He notes: "Basically, we took what some are calling the "Rising Traverse" variation, and what Rossiter describes as a 10b pitch: 'From the belay, climb a steep groove on the west side of the rib to a precarious stance with rappel slings (115'). Continue up and left and follow another corner to the ledge with blocks. (165')'. This pitch seemed a bit more exposed and serious than the rest of the route felt." Thanks Timothy for the info! 5.10a (ish). Scramble to left side of base of upper buttress. We couldn't identify the "steep left-facing dihedral (5.10a) to shallow corner (5.9)" in the guidebook description, so we climbed a face to corner system on the left side of the upper buttress, which worked and seemed to go at around 10a in one roped pitch.

Note: There are other ways to go on this pitch as well. Here's a comment I got on mountainproject about our route: "Hey Steph, we looked at the guidebook and I'm pretty sure P6 is the crack that arcs to the right and finishes a bit below the white "r" letter of your overlaid text "~10a left-facing corner". And then P7 is the the dihedral right above the right side of the arc finish, that heads up into the green lichen past the heart shaped (L-shaped) roof."

Descent
Three options, depending on whether or not you went to the summit:
1. From top of Pitch 5, scramble (3rd) NW down a gully.
2. From summit, scramble (3rd) down to the Loft (saddle between Meeker and Longs) and down this on a ramp system back to basin below base of Meeker.
3. From summit, scramble (3rd) East Ridge. Can possibly rappel Main Vein. This option seems longer and a bit unnecessary.

Intro

After my 2018 ascent of the Flying Buttress with Annie, I had always wanted to return and climb the Direct pitches that Annie and I had not climbed. Word on the street was that Pitch 1 (5.10c) was excellent but a bit sandbagged. Then the rockfall occurred in May 2022. Initially I had been wary to climb in an area of instability, but as the summer went on and more ascents were made and it became clear that the pitches below the rockfall scar were not in the line of fall, I became intrigued to head up and scope out the new Pitch 3 rockfall bypass for myself.

My friend Nate Beckwith was interested in the adventure. We both had Wednesday off work and the forecast looked like it would provide a morning weather window long enough for the 5-pitch climb, so up we headed.

Nate and I had a great day climbing the Flying Buttress Direct. We found the first 10c pitch of the Direct route to be quite challenging at the grade, but Nate puzzled it out on lead and I followed it without issue. We thought it was stellar climbing. We successfully negotiated the Right variation for Pitch 3, and I got some photos of the fresh scar. A minor weather system hit just as we topped out, but it was dry and sunny within an hour. Overall, a fun and successful day climbing a RMNP classic route.

Flying Buttress Direct
Work up difficult thin cracks through the flat face of the rib. Continue in a hand crack, then step around onto the west side and traverse over to an easy corner that leads to a belay ledge with a single old bolt.

Pitch 3

5.10b, 200'
Flying Buttress Right to bypass rockfall area
This pitch follows Pitch 3 of Flying Buttress Right described in the Rossiter guidebook. From the belay, climb a steep groove on the west side of the rib to a precarious stance with rappel slings. Continue up and left and follow another corner to the ledge with blocks.

The pre-rockfall description of Pitch 3 for Flying Buttress Direct route is: "5.9, 165'. Move up and left from the anchor and jam a one-inch crack [this is now gone], then step left and climb a left-facing dihedral until 15 feet below a roof. This section is the same as Pitch 3 of Flying Buttress Left. From here, traverse right past a bolt and climb around the right side of the roof, going past two fixed pins. Climb up and left onto the face of the rib to a stance at a horizontal crack, or continue to a long ledge with some blocks down to the right." It may be still possible to start up the right side of the buttress and regain the Direct Pitch 3 at the fixed gear. Nate and I did not attempt to regain the Direct Pitch 3 above the scar—we just climbed the full Pitch 3 of Flying Buttress Right—so I cannot confirm if this is still safely possible to get to the second half of the Direct Pitch 3.

Pitch 4

From the ledge with blocks, continue up a corner system on the west side of the rib. Either belay here, or link easily with Pitch 5.

Note that by climbing Pitch 3 of Flying Buttress Right, this puts you on a ledge with blocks that is halfway into Pitch 4 of Flying Buttress Direct. So Pitch 4 is rather short in this case.

Climb a vertical dihedral to the top of the rib.

Descent

3rd-4th
The Direct route tops out at a long level break in the buttress. From here, one may escape the route by traversing south to a notch. Descend slabs and scree to the west and north.

While most climbers scramble off after Pitch 5, the route does actually continue to the summit. Annie and I climbed this full finish on our 2018 ascent.
