Intro

Down in southern Texas, where tumbleweeds and cacti rule the desert, lies a bouldering mecca with a rich history and hundreds of problems waiting for you to climb.

Hueco Tanks is the quintessential bouldering destination. The birthplace of the V grading system, Hueco Tanks has a range of bouldering from V0 to V15. Hueco is probably best known for its roof bouldering problems—long roofs, high roofs, low roofs, short roofs—but there's also a variety of slab, vertical, steep, highball, lowball to keep just about anyone entertained.

But you gotta play the game to get in. There is limited access in order to mitigate the effects on local plants, petroglyphs, and wildlife. You either make reservations for North Mountain or hire a guide to take you to the other areas. It takes a bit of research and armchair legwork but its worth figuring out. Both Nate and my personal opinion after our trip (where we joined a guided group every day and witnessed the line of cars trying to get into North Mountain) is that getting a guide is the way to go. Then you actually get to climb and enjoy the area, rather than your Hueco experience being a hot, dusty side of the road. Thanks to Nate for doing all of the legwork to book us guides for all four days we planned to climb. All of our guides were great.

Intro

My first visit to Hueco Tanks was over New Years 2025. I had spent Christmas in Joshua Tree with my family, and Hueco Tanks was "on the way" back home to Estes Park. I joined Nate Beckwith, who had been there numerous times before. We were there for five days, on a two days on, one rest/work day, two days on schedule. This trip was actually the first time I had ever bouldered outdoors (trad climber me is terrified to get too far above the ground without a rope; admittedly I've had a roped fall in the past that led to a serious injury, making me wary of coming down hard on that leg). But due to the roof nature of Hueco bouldering and an ever-present bouldering pad mountain, I felt pretty comfortable playing around on most problems. I also found it quite humbling. V1 seemed hard and the heel hooking, knee-barring, and climbing overhanging roofs horizontal with the ground was quite foreign to my body. I ended the trip feeling pleasantly sore, frustrated by my feeling of weakness and my nonexsistent skills to climb overhanging terrain, humbled by others' strength and willingness to boulder high above the ground, and motivated to do some more focused climbing training over the winter. My goal is to return someday and get to the top of some problems I worked on but could not do.

The following page gives photos from the week of bouldering at Hueco Tanks. Overall this was quite a unique experience and I would gladly make the 12 hour drive from Estes Park and come back again.

    Drive Home

12 hour drive back to Estes Park. I picked up Newt in Boulder (Nate's partner Jackie and their three cats Jimmy, Tucker, and Peach had welcomed Newt into their household while I had been on the road during the holidays).

    2 weeks later....

What happens when a non-boulderer goes bouldering....
