The Frying Pan is a ridge of sandstone cliffs located on a steep hill above the Frying Pan River, with southern exposure and sweeping views of the surrounding area. There are over 100 routes here ranging from 5.7-5.13+, mostly single pitch, and a mix of sport and trad. Bolted anchors, a flat base, and generally good rock make cragging here quite pleasant. Moreover, the climbing is technical and engaging.

The first time I climbed at the Frying Pan was in May 2020, for a half-day stop as a great way to break up the 6-7 hour drive back home from the Black Canyon.

On this page, I give photos from climbing at the Frying Pan, organized by date. At the bottom of the page, I keep a list of the climbs I've done at the Frying Pan.

After spending a few days climbing in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, my climbing partner Nate and I thought it would be a nice idea to break up the 6-7 hour drive back home by stopping to crag somewhere along the way. We stopped at an outdoors store in Carbondale and bought a guidebook. After perusing the book, we decided to check out the sandstone cliffs of the Frying Pan. We spent half a day cragging there. We were both impressed with the quality of the climbing and enjoyed the sublime setting of the area. We climbed 7 routes. I've included some random photos below.
